Beautiful Covers Can Be Deceiving…

All of us have our own reason for choosing to read certain books. Some of us choose books based on the description/synopsis, or maybe even the title. Some choose books based on the author or the publisher. But if you’re anything like me… You’ve chosen books solely on the cover design.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read a book because, “Ooh! That cover is so pretty!” Or, “OMG – That is gorgeous. That must be a good book.”

Here lately, I’ve been very disappointed when I choose a book because of the pretty cover.

and i darken

And I Darken by Kiersten White is a perfect example of this. I’m not saying that I hated the book (review will be posted tomorrow), but it was nothing like I expected it to be. Based on the cover, you would think the book would be beautifully dark, with war and action, and a fierce character. That isn’t quite what this book delivers. So, in my opinion…

This book cover = deceiving.

SONGS FOR THE MISSING BY STEWART O'NAN

Angelfall by Susan Ee has such a cool, unique cover. It grabs your attention as soon as you see it. It makes you wonder what’s going on inside that cover. It grabbed me, that’s for sure. This story lacked action and adventure and I found myself quite bored throughout the book. Unfortunately, the actual story wasn’t as unique as its cover. So to me…

This book cover = deceiving.

There’s a lot more book covers that have deceived me recently… But I’d like to hear from you guys…

  • How do you choose books? Cover, title, author, synopsis?
  • Have you ever chosen a book solely on its cover and been disappointed? If so, which books?

  1. Ooh, I never thought about those being deceiving…I’ve heard such good things. But I’ve been there when it comes to a pretty cover and a boring book. It breaks my heart.
I DO tend to let covers sway me…I feel like if someone has pride in their book, they’ll want it to look as amazing as possible. Probably not the best way to go, since I’ve received awesome RaRs from authors that had very banal covers.

    1. Oh yes… And I Darken and Angelfall weren’t awful books by any means… They just weren’t what I thought they would be or as good as I thought they’d be.

I’ve even passed up on reading a book because the cover didn’t draw me in. Which isn’t a good thing because like you, I’ve read RaR’s with covers that weren’t very attractive too, and the book ended up being great! I’ve been trying to teach myself to NOT choose a book solely on the cover, but it’s a habit that’s been hard for me to break… No matter how many times I get let down by pretty covers.
